Untitled Drinks Cabinet

UNTITLED DRINKS CABINET

Hospitality_the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.

Living rooms in Morocco tend to all have something in common. I’m not referring to the rugs or the saturated colours but the one thing that they all most likely have in common is what I always refer to as the tea table.

The one that I remember the most is my grandmother’s. A low side table with a carved timber base and an etched brass tray placed in the corner of the room surrounded by upholstered low seating.

The table was always ready to be used
as the teapot, glasses and sugar would permanently live there. Always covered with an embroidered silk throw to protect them from dust until guests arrive.

This drink cabinet takes that same hospitality concept that the tea table encapsulates in the Moroccan culture to our everyday life.

Untitle Drinks Cabinet was part of Marsha Golemac’s NGV Melbourne Design Week 2022 exhibition, Material Culture.

The exhibition is an attempt to expand on conversations surrounding why and how things are made, and what social, functional, or symbolic needs they satisfy.

We’re often presented with competing ideas of old versus new, as if there is not value in both. We see it in all facets of our everyday lives. This exhibition offers a space for artists, and guests alike, to imagine a world where yesterday’s ideologies and tomorrow’s innovations can coexist.
